Matthew 14:13-21
Reflect
One can hardly fault the disciples for thinking the best answer for the physical nourishment needs of the people around them is to send them away to go gather whatever food they can to eat. Jesus takes the opportunity to reveal what He is capable of in a physical means, and what He will do in an even greater measure spiritually. Jesus takes the five loaves and two fish and feeds a crowd that could have exceeded 10,000-12000 men, women, and children. Jesus doesn’t provide just enough for the hungry mass; there are 12 full baskets of leftovers.
There is a reminder here that no matter what we bring to Jesus, He doesn’t look at our offering, wondering what He can do with it. He will work with what we give to Him. Also, Jesus Himself is the ultimate provision. His sacrifice, once and for all paid the price that none of us could ever pay. We had nothing to offer; Jesus offers Himself, a sacrifice that is not merely just enough to free all who come to Him. Jesus pays in full the debt of those seeking the gift of His salvation.
In our limitations, Jesus is limitless. Praise God for Jesus’ unending provision.
