Devotional Guide for Wednesday, July 17

Philippians 3:15-4:1

Reflect

Increasingly, our culture is becoming very interested in practicing spirituality. It is not at all uncommon to hear a person describe themselves as a “spiritual person”. Being “spiritual” trends well.

A couple of weeks ago, Pastor Terry wrote a devotional that included Phil.1:15-18. Paul emphasizes there that, though we may have stark differences, the crucial matter is Jesus being preached (1:18). When we embrace others that love Jesus and accept that His Kingdom is far broader than our limited experience, we are saying that those differences are inconsequential.

This is not what Paul is referring to when he identifies those in vv18-19. If Phil.3:2 is identifying the legalists, here Paul is identifying those on the other end of the spectrum, what some identify as libertines.

Though there is room for acceptable diversity, the unity that glorifies Jesus requires more than just good intentions. It requires unity on the non-negotiables.

Some might raise their eyebrows as they read Paul say he is an example (v17) of how to live. Is Paul arrogant or simply identifying that he has received the grace of Jesus upon him and, because of Jesus, he humbly accepts his status?

Apply

How do you differentiate negotiables from non-negotiables? Whose example are you following? Do they know that? What is your next step in accepting that Jesus calls you to be an example to others?
