Proverbs 14:20-35
Reflect
One of my first memories is being awakened in the middle of the night and carried to the storm shelter at Crystal Springs Baptist Camp in North Dakota because of tornado activity. Inside the storm shelter, there was safety, and this brought about a spirit of joy as the crammed campers sang through the remainder of the night.
In our passage today, the verse I would like to focus on is verse 26: “Whoever fears the Lord has a secure fortress, and for their children it will be a refuge.”
Brittanica describes a fortress, also known as a stronghold, as any work erected to strengthen a position against attack. Fortifications are usually of two types: permanent and field. Permanent fortifications are most often erected in times of peace. Field fortifications, constructed when in battle, consist of entrenched positions for protection, and clearing of the area from danger.
May our reverence, obedience and relationship to the Lord develop more and more during times of “peace”, and times of “battle”. May this “fortress” always be a place of security and safety and therefore joy, for our own lives and the lives of our children.
“And when the battle comes I know You're my defender A mighty fortress is our God
And when the victory's won I know I'll still be standing A mighty fortress is our God”
