Devotional Thought for Monday, December 1

Hebrews 6:19: “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain.”

When I think about the term “hope” I sometimes, regrettably,  use it interchangeably with the word “wish”. If I hope/wish hard enough, the things I desire will come to be.

When Paul talks about Jesus as our hope, however, he makes it very clear that this hope is more than something we can will into reality by merely squeezing our eyes shut. Paul uses terms like "firm and secure” to paint a picture of rest and peace for our soul to linger in.

When I hear this description of hope, I think of strong and solid comfort. Jesus invites you into a place of hope where he is the fulfillment of God's promises. We don't have to do anything ourselves for that to be true. He is the “forerunner”; He went before us on the cross, ready to keep us steady and anchored through whatever life brings our way.

This Advent season, are you letting Jesus be the hope for your life, your circumstances, your world? Is your soul able to fully rest in His hope?
