Devotional Guide for Thursday, December 12

Galatians 3:26, 4:4

Reflect
“For you are all sons of God”. I start reading these first words and immediately my thoughts get rolling. We are all sons of God, so if all mankind is created by God, are we ALL his children?  I read “through faith in Christ Jesus “. Wow, that changes matters around. Yes, God has created us and loves us, but to become a child of God we need to believe in our Lord Jesus Christ. In fact, God sees us only as living if we, through faith in Jesus, have His spirit in us. Before that, we are considered dead. It is interesting how Paul goes on to assume that believers in Jesus know that practical steps in following Jesus are a natural consequence. So if he mentions in verse 27 “For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ”, he is certain that one of the steps in following Jesus is baptism. The public declaration of dying to yourself and being raised with Christ as a new creation, ‘clothed yourselves with Christ’. Colossians 3:1-17 give us a broad spectrum of what an obedient lifestyle looks like. I was once again surprised how my old self still lingers around and how desperately I need the forgiveness of Jesus, which brings us to our last point. In Jesus Christ we are “Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to the promise” (v29). The promise was for the the new country, the new life. I find it absolutely thrilling that we inherit the promise. We are not slaves to sin anymore, but can call out to God for help and thus overcome our own shortcomings. We are in the world, but God sent His son (v4) to set us free and reunite us with Him so that we can be called “sons of God” and heirs to His promises.
