Devotional Guide for Tuesday, July 19

2 Chronicles 14:2-15

Reflect

It is refreshing to read about king Asa. Instead of following the example of his father, he was more like his forefather David in that he did “what was good and right in the eyes of the Lord” (v2). He was a leader whose heart was expressed in action-- action that pleased God. He changed what was in his power to change. His alignment with God’s will resulted in peace for his community. During this time of peace, he concentrated his efforts in preparing for tougher times ahead. When the enemy did come with a force much greater than his armies, his prayer was an example of his faith in his God. He prayed, “Lord, there is none like You to help the powerless against the mighty. Help us, Lord our God, for we rely on You, and in Your name we have come against this vast army. Lord, you are our God; do not let mere mortals prevail against You.”( v11).

Apply

His prayer recognizes God’s power to help; requests God’s intervention against the vast army as Asa humbly places his reliance on God; reminds God of their special relationship of Father and son, the One who fights for Asa.

What are you facing today? Recognize God’s power; request His intervention; remind yourself and God of your beautiful relationship and remember that He fights for you.
