2 Chronicles 23:12-21
Reflect
“Why would you do it like this?” Our summer missionary was once again inquiring about the ways we did things in this different culture. How uneducated was she? Or was there some truth to her question? Was I annoyed because I was the older person with the say in our place?
That’s the scene in today’s text. Athaliah, power woman, ruthless and used to running the country as she sees fit. And then a really young king Josiah, 8 years old and no experience.
Wouldn’t it be better to have someone more mature being in leadership who knows the ins and outs?
As I muse on that question, the phrase of the priest Jehoiada stands out: “…that they would be the Lord’s people.” (v16)
Successful leadership measured by God’s standards is by the heart’s attitude rather than experience and knowledge. Many other examples point to that: Samuel and Eli, David and Saul, Timothy and the Christians in Ephesus.
Apply
As a “mature” Christian, never be too satisfied with your own Christian life. Be humble enough to hear God’s whisper and challenge, as younger Christians state their observations, questions or suggestions. The LORD looks at the heart. The measure God uses is not our status or age, but our heart!
Lord keep us teachable and tuned to the guidance of your Spirit!
