Acts 6:1-7
Reflect
In our backyard we have an apple tree. We really enjoy the apples from our tree, they are good to eat and make wonderful baked goods. However, this fall there are a significant number of apples on the tree, so much so that the branches are hanging quite low to the ground. The substantial amount of fruit can create problems, broken branches, fruit that is spoiled by birds or rabbits that can reach the fruit. With abundance there can be challenges. What is the proper way to address the challenges of a plentiful apple tree? There are measures that make sense and there are ways that do not. It wouldn’t make sense for me to stand beside the apple tree and hold up the low branches all day. It would make sense to either pick the apples or set up props to keep the branches intact.
Here in Acts, there is a similar situation where, out of abundance, there are challenges. The disciples must make wise choices with how they are to handle the situation. With the choices they made, they affirmed the calling of individuals and released them to serve.
