Devotional Guide for Wednesday, October 12

Acts 13:42-52

Reflect

Have you ever driven past a church and wondered why there were so many people attending that church? Have you ever felt jealous toward their church? Have you ever thought that another church might not be doing “church” correctly, at least not how you think doing church correctly looks?

Jealousy and pride are powerful emotions that can make people do strange things. In today’s passage we see jealousy and pride keeping the Jews from seeing the big picture of how God is at work. Work that should be celebrated.

When the Jews saw how many people were paying attention to Paul and Barnabas they were filled with jealousy and began to work hard to have Paul and Barnabas discredited. How sad is that? Here people were being drawn to consider following Jesus, but the Jews were jealous that the people were listening to someone other than themselves.

Apply

I hope we are people who see the big picture and celebrate when people choose to follow Jesus, even if it is at the hands and feet of other people who love and follow Jesus.
