John 1:19-28

Reflect

The Neo-Pentecostal movement in Brazil has started a dangerous practice. Many of the senior pastors have given themselves titles of Bishop, Prophet, Apostle. In today’s passage, we see John being questioned as to who he was.

John knew who he wasn’t – he “confessed freely” that he wasn’t the Messiah, Elijah or the Prophet. John also knew who he was, and the role he played in the Kingdom of God. John knew who Jesus was and knew that his role was to serve Jesus and point the people to Him. John’s identity was firmly placed on who he was and who Jesus was. His humility and service are remarkable. His role was not to call attention to himself, but to call attention to Jesus, just like the ancient announcers would loudly read a proclamation that a dignitary was coming to town. The people then would clear the pathway of obstacles and would fill in any holes to make the way smooth to welcome Him.

Apply

If you were asked “who are you”, what would your answer be? As followers of Jesus, our identity should be clear, and our conviction of Him as Saviour, the only source of hope and peace in this world, should cause us to use who we are to draw others to Him.
