John 1:29-34

Reflect

In verse 29 we read this amazing introduction of Jesus as the Lamb of God. This side of the cross, the introduction makes sense to us. We have the completed story of Christ sacrificing His life that we might be forgiven and restored to God. For the contemporaries of John the Baptist, however, this introduction would have been quite unexpected. Their ears were waiting for a different declaration. Something like, “Behold the Warrior of God, who takes away the power of Rome.” Had the greatest need of humanity been external, this would have indeed made sense. But God knew that any kind of salvation that does not address our sin would be a band-aid at best.

The human heart is so prone to think that all will be well if our situation improves and our problems go away. We underestimate how deeply our pride, selfishness and self-protection are root causes of so much of our fear, anxiety, anger, and driven yearning for some elusive “more.”

Apply

Where might you be looking for an external fix when Jesus, the Lamb of God, desires to do a deeper work in your heart?
