Devotional Guide for Monday, January 16

John 5:1-15

Reflect

Jesus asks the lame man a simple question: “Do you want to get well?”. We might wonder why Jesus would ask that question. Isn’t it obvious that the man would want to get well?

This question for the lame man tells us two things about Jesus. First, it tells us that Jesus understands that not everyone who is sick wants to get well. After 38 years it might have been that the lame man had resigned himself to the fact that this was his lot in life and he was ok with it now. What we see is that the lame man never gave up hope that he could be healed. Jesus sought out and confirmed that desire for healing.

Secondly, it shows us the heart of Jesus. He will not force Himself and His ability to heal on others.  While He has the power, He does not go about dispensing that power with reckless abandon. When it comes to our situation, above all else Jesus sees our greatest need and that is a need to be reconciled to God.

Do you want to be reconciled? Jesus will not force Himself on us. He calls us to repent of our sin, turn to Him and follow Him.  Thanks be to God for His amazing grace.
