Devotional Guide for Monday, January 23

John 6:60-70

Reflect

As humans, we can be inconsistent.  For some of us, there have been times of inconsistency perhaps even this week when we applauded a person for doing their job well, and within a matter of seconds were so angry we were calling for their immediate dismissal and wondered how they ever got their job in the first place. When would we ever act in such a way? Have you watched a sporting event recently where you are a huge fan of one of the teams? When the official makes a call favouring our team, we strongly support the call. However, when the call goes against our team….we may not be in favour of the official being considered for another term of officiating.

Here Jesus experiences the fickle crowd.  When He provides the food, as we see Him do at the beginning of this chapter, people love Him and will follow Him wherever He goes.  But when He speaks harder truths or when He offers food that feeds the soul and spirit, not merely the body, people aren’t as excited to follow Him. Peter understands that Jesus offers what they most need and is willing to stay with Jesus.

Where are you at in regard to Jesus and His teaching?  I pray that we all will have the strength to stand with Jesus.
