Devotional Guide for Wednesday, January 25

John 7:25-44

Reflect

Verse 25 unexpectedly stopped me in “my tracks”. This line did so: “Is not this the man whom they seek to kill?” My goodness, on Sunday mornings we have launched a series that is calling us to go and “Do what Jesus Did”! There is no doubt that Jesus devoted much of His ministry to the contemplative life. He prayed, had solitude, and yes, He abided in Scripture. The contemplative life is the launching pad from which Jesus, and by doing what He did, we go into the world with a life of transforming love.

Today’s passage is resoundingly clear that those observing Jesus did not understand His passion to make no peace with oppression. Not those with the power and privilege that were attempting to make a Messiah in their own image, not the crowds, not even His disciples. It took extreme measures and tremendous struggle, until they came to really know that God is glorified when we love all. It is naive to say that our culture has lost its way, without at least considering if we, the Bride of Jesus, have not also done the same. The signs (v31) of Jesus were driven by love and were radical enough to drive people to hate loving all. It is only as we truly model Jesus’s values that “Do What Jesus Did” has integrity.

Take a selfie with your ‘phone’. Could it be that today Jesus will look like the person you see in the frame? May salvation come to where you journey today.
