John 14:1-14

After a sobering supper together, the disciples were having a difficult time receiving what Jesus had been preparing them for.  At times, when we read the first three verses of this passage, we can get caught up with heaven and what the Father’s house looks like, but the point of John’s writing is not about buildings but about space.  There is room for those who know and love Jesus Christ.

The thrust of the passage is found in the first verse: troubled people need peace and affirmation which can only be given through intimately knowing and believing in Jesus Christ.  The disciples had come to the point where they were not just trusting Jesus with various miracles but with their lives as Jesus prepares them for His departure.  I would need a pep talk if I knew the person that I’ve been following for years suddenly decided to leave me!

Reflect

The goal of our relationship with Jesus is not to know him well intellectually, but personally.

This conversation reveals that the disciples struggled to know Jesus well.  The situation revealed a lot more to the disciples than we first thought; when we undergo trouble, it often reveals more to us than we’d like to admit.

In what ways does your default response to trouble reflect how well you know Jesus Christ?
