John 19:31-42
Reflect
There is nothing that can get in the way of what God is up to. John was an eyewitness to the death of his beloved Jesus. He saw Him suffer and die a terrible death on a cross. The Messiah whom the disciples thought would save them from their Roman enemies was now dead. But even when it seemed that evil had won, we are reminded of the incredible sovereignty of God. In the passage today we see Old Testament prophecies fulfilled. It was prophesized that “not a bone of his would be broken,” even though it was a common practice to hasten death by the breaking of their legs. Zechariah 12:10 was also fulfilled, “they shall look on Him who they pierced,” even though the solider was given no order to do so. In the middle of this situation God was in control and working out His sovereign plan to bring redemption through the death of His Son on a cross.
As we take a pause between Good Friday and Easter Sunday, we are reminded of God’s sovereignty and His incredible love for us. It is only through Jesus alone that we can be restored to a relationship with the Father.
