Genesis 1:26-2:3
Reflect
Today’s passage contains the climax of the Creation account: the seventh day. Theologian John H. Walton, in his book “The Lost World of Genesis One”, draws on literature from the Ancient Near East to lend insight into the significance of this day. He states, “Without hesitation the ancient reader would conclude that this is a temple text and that day seven is the most important of the seven days.” God has finished creating His temple, the earth. He has set up His resting place and now rules from it. We, as His creation made in His image, are His representatives to the rest of creation, equipped by Him to rule. This is completely unlike other ancient creation texts where humanity is made to serve a ruling god. Walton gives us this image:
[Creation] is assigned their offices, told to whom they will report, and thus given an idea of their place in the company. Their workday is determined by the clock, and they are expected to be productive. Foremen have been put in place (humanity, day 6), and the company is now ready to operate… The owner [has] arrived and moved into his office (day 7).

How does this image impact the way you read today’s passage? Embracing the idea that you are God’s representative in your home, your community, and in creation, how might this affect your values and choices?
