Genesis 3:17-24
Reflect
In yesterday’s Scripture passage we saw a pretty human gut reaction to messing up: hiding and covering up mistakes. After Adam and Eve sinned, they suddenly realized they were naked and tried to cover themselves with clothing made from fig leaves. In the passage today, verse 21 says, “The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.” In order for God to clothe them with these skins, an animal had to die. In a beautiful way this pointed to a time in the future when Christ would die for our sins and provide for us a garment of righteousness.
We can trade in the garment of fig leaves! The garment we make for ourselves is to deal with the problem of sin. Perhaps it’s the garment of good works or being a good person. We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. We can never make ourselves right before God. We can never sew enough fig leaves to deal with our shame. But Jesus can. And He did. Through Christ we can trade in our fig leaves. We can be clothed in the righteousness of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21)!
