Genesis 15:1-21

Reflect

In Sunday school I teach the children with an experiment. “Do not worry, God cares for you.”  We fill a glass a bit at a time with water, representing the worries we have. If we try to solve our life’s problems by ourselves, the water spills out and creates chaos. If we bring our worries to God, He has us covered. I take cardboard, cover the glass and I can turn the glass upside down without a spill. The children “ahhh”. But suddenly to our surprise, unexpectedly the water gushed out – to the delight of the kids. 😊

Abram was promised descendants and land. His question to God was, “How will I know God keeps His promise?” In the moment of my experiment glitch, that also crosses my mind. Are we covered by God even if our prayer doesn’t seem to be heard?

God confirms to Abram that He will keep His side of the covenant by an ancient custom.  When two parties made an agreement, they split animals in half and both parties would walk through the middle as a sign to keep the agreement.

Only God “walked” through Abram’s presented animals as “cloud and fire”.

Apply

God keeps His promise of “Do not fear, (add your name here). I am a shield to you.” (v.1)
Even if your prayers are answered differently than expected, know that God is faithful!
