Devotional Guide for Monday, May 8

Genesis 14:1-24

Reflect

Today the Oilers will play a game here at home in the NHL playoffs. With that in mind, I remember a speech given by retired Oiler, Ryan Smyth as he was inducted into the Oilers Hall of Fame. Smyth thanked many people, his teammates, coaches, trainers, friends, fans, and especially his family. After these words of thanks, he said, “Although all these people have played a major part in my career, there is one who's made it all possible--God. I am so blessed to have been given the gift of hockey from a young age. The talent and passion that He gave me for hockey is something I will forever be grateful for. It was His will that I had the career I did, it is His grace that I stayed healthy for 19 seasons. Without His love and mercy, I wouldn't be here today.  For this honour I receive today, all glory goes to God.”

In our passage today Abram didn’t want anyone other than God to be glorified. If Abram was going to be remembered for what he had, or what he had accomplished, he wanted the glory to go to God, not to man. Who gets the glory in your life? Who is the hero of your story? My prayer for us all is that Jesus is the hero of our story.
