Genesis 19:1-29

Reflect

In many stories there is a character that pays a high price for wanting to hold on to something that they value seemingly more than life itself. The desire for wealth, fame, or power becomes their undoing as it draws them into a place where they are unwilling to let go of what they have attained.

The lives of these individuals become cautionary reminders of what happens when we hold onto what we have accumulated when we ought to let it go. The account of Lot and his family, notably his wife in this passage, have been etched into my mind. As I have looked into this passage, I have come to see that our English translations tell us that she “looked back”. The Hebrew word here is transliterated as “nâbat” which in most cases is used elsewhere in Scripture to describe not a quick glance but a “looking with consideration”. In other words, Lot’s wife spent significant time looking with longing at what she was leaving.

Paul looked at his past accomplishments as a loss or as rubbish in comparison to knowing Jesus.

To follow Jesus, we must leave behind us certain aspects of our old life. For some of us that may be hard to do. I pray that we will have the strength to run, without hesitation, into the arms of Jesus.
