Genesis 26:1-16

Reflect

God is immutable. This means God does not change. He is constant in His character, in His actions and word. He is faithful. One of the great hymns of the Christian church is “Great is thy faithfulness”. The first verse reads “Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father. There is no shadow of turning with Thee. Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not, as Thou hast been, Thou forever will be.” God is faithful; He doesn’t say one thing and then do another.

People on the other hand are not immutable. We can be faithful, but there are times when we struggle to remain consistent.

Isaac receives a wonderful promise. God takes him out of a land of famine, and God directs him to a place where He says He will bless Isaac and his children, and their children. God is continuing to follow through on His promise to Abraham. Isaac obeys God, and we are proud of him for being obedient. However, he then gives into fear of the Philistines and lies about Rebekah being his wife.

This is not Isaac’s finest hour. God brings correction to Isaac through Abimelech, and yet still holds true to His covenant promise. God wants us to trust Him, to be faithful to Him as He will always be faithful to us.
