Devotional Guide for Friday, June 2

Genesis 28:10-22

Reflect

In Jacob’s challenging journey through Canaan alone, God had met him in a vivid dream that involved an angel escalator! As for the actual details and whether it fits with our 21st century understanding of an “angel escalator”, we’re unsure but the reality of the dream remains true: God reveals Himself to His people and offers protection, provision and promise.

“Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land.”
Imagine traveling through a land where there are fierce and idolatrous people. These people were fierce and not easily defeated--the return home was questionable. But when accompanied by the Lord, the future was set. There would be a homecoming. No matter the challenge, God would not leave Jacob until the promise was fulfilled.

Although most of us may not experience the journey of trekking through a dangerous land, the God of Jacob remains the same and offers the same promises to all of us who belong to Him.

Apply

In what ways are you drawing near to the Lord? Ultimately, our promised homecoming is made available through Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit offers us a foretaste of that promised reality daily. How might God’s presence and promise encourage or challenge you today?
