Psalm 121

Reflect

Although I have never had the privilege of visiting Jerusalem, I have researched enough to know that if you come overland to Jerusalem, you will end up going uphill as you make your final approach into this ancient city. So, anyone walking or riding into Jerusalem must look up as they journey towards it. The writer of this song instructs the singers to lift their eyes up.

Raise your gaze from the dusty road in front of you and look up. Look up to where you are headed. Look up to see what heights must be scaled.

With this perspective, one’s imagination might kick in to think about the dangers that may be encountered on the journey. The psalmist is quick to address the fear of what lies ahead. Whatever I will encounter between where I am and where I am going, the Creator of everything that is seen and unseen is with me, not just to observe my journey, but to help me each step of the way.

What are you facing that is daunting? What do you look at and wonder, what hidden perils lie along the way? No matter what we face, God is with us, both now and forevermore.
