Psalm 122

Reflect

As a child and teenager, going to church was always a highlight for our family. We looked forward to Sunday and prepared for it by studying the Sunday School lesson, taking an extra-long bath and setting out Sunday clothes. We looked forward to worshipping, learning, hearing from God, interceding, and especially seeing friends. In this Psalm, we see the same joy in going to the “house of the Lord”, with families setting out with the same destination coming together to “praise the name of the Lord” and to intercede in prayer for peace, security, family and friends.

I love seeing the children fly down the steps on Sunday, excited to come to Sunday School. The coming together of God’s people gives us a taste of the Kingdom of God, and of what we are destined for. No matter where you go in the world, when you get together with God’s family, there is a sense of belonging and love.

Spurgeon said this about the gathering of believers: “First we love it and then we labour for it, as in this passage we see its good, and then seek its good”.

May coming to church be good for our soul and for our families, and may we seek the good of our church by loving it, and labouring for it.
