Psalm 129

Reflect

Songs of Ascent are written and sung as the Jewish Pilgrims made their way uphill to Jerusalem for their festivals. The Jewish priests also sang these songs as they made their way to the temple (GotQuestions.org), songs still spoken and sung by many people.

What does your “song of Ascent” sound like in this season of your life?

"I think I can!  I think I can!" like the little red engine?  "What a Friend I have in Jesus" or maybe "Go West young man..." or "The Wheels on the Bus go Round and Round" or "Onward Christian Soldiers" or "Country Roads take me Home" or "Be Thou my Vision"? How about "Breathe" or "Freedom Reigns"? Maybe "Don't Stop Believing" or "I have Decided to Follow Jesus" and "It is Well with my Soul"?  SO many possibilities. Kidding aside...

I grew up in a small town in Illinois which was a half hour drive to church. One of my best memories is the six of us singing all the way there and home (most of the time). We had our own “family songs”, our “Songs of Ascent”.

The songs of Ascent are true songs of their circumstances. Then they cried out to God and God answered, or the reminder “the LORD is on our side” or “the LORD surrounds His people” or “THEN GOD...”! The final victory IS the LORD'S!

Apply
Maybe today you feel the captivity. Remember, God IS faithful to deliver! Chose to lift your eyes to Him and stand strong for the end of the story. We all have our “Songs of Ascent”. Maybe take some time today to sit with your journal and write it out. Remember, God is on your side!
