Galatians 2:6-10
Reflect
As we can see in this passage, some people (Paul called them false believers), had a problem with the gospel that Paul was preaching to the Gentiles. They thought that circumcision should be part of salvation. In the Jewish faith, males were circumcised as babies, and it was a sign that they were part of God’s covenant. Paul preached that new Gentile believers didn’t need to do this. They didn’t need to be circumcised to be saved--Christ’s work on the cross was enough. Paul met with the leaders in Jerusalem, and they agreed with the gospel Paul was preaching.
Paul was called to preach to the Gentiles and Peter to the Jews. There was not a separate gospel for each but ONE gospel, the gospel of salvation through Christ.
While circumcision may not be a hot topic in our churches today, we can still be in danger of adding to the gospel. Things like believing we are saved by our own merit, by being a good person, or by the things we do for God. We are saved by grace through faith. Take a minute to think about that truth. What would it look like to lean into that today?
