Galatians 3:6-14
Reflect
This semester our church’s theme is drawn from a main theme in this letter to the Galatians, “Dwelling in Freedom”. To obtain the freedom that Jesus offers, much of this letter is devoted to the other key theme, which is faith.
To attempt to grasp how radical this was (and is), we must appreciate that no one saw this coming. Not the disciples of Jesus, not the Jews that were clinging to being Abraham’s ancestors, not Paul who dedicated himself to persecuting those of “The Way”. Following the law is how they were trained and received affirmation. God did a brand-new thing when Jesus, the Messiah, went to the cross and revealed that faith in what He accomplished is “The Way”.
This broke down all barriers. No longer did race, class, gender, wealth, education, or any other division separate a person from God. Thus, Paul here exclaims we shouldn’t try to fit others into our obsolete way of living; live in loving unity with people that look, think, and behave differently than us.
How do you discern the tension of staying rooted in God’s Word, while also anticipating the Holy Spirit’s creative new movements?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, you created the way that brings unity. Soften my heart to feel the culture’s brokenness, as well as my own. Activate me to experience the dwelling in freedom as I step out in faith and trust the Holy Spirit to guide me to love those that I am distanced from. Amen.
