Ephesians 2:19-22

Reflect

What is a cornerstone? One Architect website I found says that a cornerstone has three distinct functions that distinguish it from all other stones used in the construction of a building, the cornerstone serves to communicate a building’s orientation, its history and its celebration.

The orientation of a building is determined by the cornerstone which is often the very first part of the foundation from which the rest of the building is laid out from. The history is often from inscriptions chiseled into the cornerstone. Often the date the cornerstone was laid is found on a cornerstone. Inside a cornerstone can be found items significant to the time that the building was built, celebrating the establishment of a notable structure. McKernan has a cornerstone per se, although it is no longer found in the corner. It is on the east side of the front doors of the church.

If we take the three distinctions mentioned by the architect and apply them to our passage today which notes Jesus as our cornerstone, we would find He is the one from which our lives are to be oriented. We determine the layout of our life from that of Jesus. He is the reference point from which history is set; we measure our days from Christ. And He is the reason why we celebrate anything good. I pray that Jesus Christ would be the cornerstone for you today.
