Devotional Guide for Tuesday, January 2

Matthew 1:18-25

Reflect

Joseph is often an “unsung” hero, that takes a “back seat” in the Christmas story. Here we read that he is an honourable man, faithful to the Law. We can see that he not only wanted to do what was right, but he wanted to do it in the right way. By law he could have divorced Mary quietly, or even had her stoned, but his heart wanted to do this in the right way. His encounter with the angel gave him the direction and the courage he needed to follow through with taking on the challenging role of a husband and father under frightening circumstances. When our actions and decisions affect the lives of others, it is crucial that we not only do what is right, but also in the right way, seeking God’s direction.

Apply
Joseph gave the gift of obedience to God, protection, direction and leadership to Mary, Jesus, and the children that followed. He trained Jesus in his trade, and then he disappeared from the scene and we know no more. His gifts to those he was charged with gave continuity to God’s bigger plan. What gifts are we giving that will be a part of God’s big story in the time that we are granted?
