Devotional Guide for Saturday, January 20

Matthew 6:19-24

Reflect

Reading today’s passage, it can easily feel like Jesus is speaking directly to 21st century North American culture, which maybe just tells us that this isn’t anything new. How easy it is for us to put too much value in our financial security, thinking if  we can control that, we will have control over our lives. But just as it says in the passage (and it’s the same today), as secure as we think having wealth will be, it can always be destroyed or lost in an instant. And what are we left with when we lose it?

It’s not that money is necessarily a bad thing, but Jesus’ words are pretty strong at the end. “No one can serve two masters… You cannot serve both God and money.”

Apply
When you look at the things you have and the wealth that you’ve acquired, how do you see it? Is it a master that exerts its control over you, or do you feel like you have to manage and take control of it? Or perhaps, is it a gift from a generous God, that we can use for His purposes in the world around us? How might we be able to have generous eyes as we go through our day?
