Devotional Guide for Saturday, February 3

Matthew 9:1-8

Reflect

One thing I find interesting about our passage today is the role of friendship in the story. For the paralyzed man, it was significant that he had friends that could carry him to Jesus. And for the friends, it was significant that they could carry him to Jesus. When it says that Jesus “saw their faith” it’s not specific that it was the paralyzed man’s faith, or the friend’s faith, but I’d like to think that it’s both. Together they believed that Jesus could do something.

I think in different times in our lives, we experience being in each of those roles. There are times when we ourselves are doing well and are afforded the opportunity to help carry our struggling friends to Jesus. And it is important we do that. There are also times when we more identify with the paralyzed man, and we need friends in our life that will carry us to Jesus. Perhaps there are times where it’s both.

Who are those people in your life in this season? Who are you able to help carry towards Jesus, and who are you letting carry you towards Jesus?
