Devotional Guide for Friday, February 2

Matthew 8:28-34

Reflect

Prior to this passage, we witnessed Jesus conquering disease and nature. Now we see Jesus conquering forces that are beyond the natural realm! There are three points in this passage that would have shocked the first-century Jewish reader:

1. Jesus was intentional in entering Gentile territory (Gadara).
2. He went to a cemetery full of unclean bodies and evil spirits.
3. He interacted with two men possessed by demons, who were avoided by everyone.

Spiritual forces were something to be feared, but Jesus was face-to-face with authority and power to drive the demons away – it was clear that they were unmatched. The first century readers would have been astonished to know that Jesus walked against the grain of Gentile communities and spiritual forces. Not only that, but this passage also showcases the compassion of Jesus for those who were not able to even call for help. These people were isolated, trapped, and burdened by forces that were beyond their control, but their interaction with Jesus led them to full liberation.

Apply

Consider attitudes, habits, or areas of growth that will require the power and compassion of Jesus. Continue to walk in prayer about this as you grow in your relationship with God.
Pray about this with a friend.
