Devotional Guide for Wednesday, February 14

Matthew 12:1-14

Reflect

What an incredible day today!

Flower and chocolate shops are working late to serve their customers.

This evening, we will launch Lent together with our profound Ash Wednesday service.

Add to that, a couple of my best buddies celebrate their birthday! What a day!

Today’s passage is one where those around Jesus were likely cringing as, yet again, Jesus chooses to do some of His finest work on a Sabbath. Jesus cuts through the religiosity and accepted practices to expose where one’s values and identity rest in.

I must admit, as a pastor it’s likely that providing compassion to people might be appealing, as it is the last socially approved part of my calling. It’s accepted when I empathetically invite people to reveal their wounds and then together tenderly mend the sores. Might I say that’s the easy part of ministry.

What is challenging is to walk with a person and have them drastically care about what Jesus lovingly cares about and obey Him.

Jesus doesn’t tenderly stroke the man’s wounds; rather, He provides an opportunity for the man to advance by doing it Jesus’ way or stay wounded. It took courage for the man to obey and do things Jesus’ way.

What’s the wound that cripples you?

Jesus is looking you square in the eyes and saying, “Stretch out your hand”. Your move.
