Matthew 12:38-45
Reflect
Have you ever tried to ask God for a sign or perhaps negotiate with God to prove His power and existence?
“God, if you just help me on this exam, I’ll follow you for the rest of my life!” “Lord, if you just make my favourite hockey team win the Stanley Cup, I’ll admit that you’re real.” “God, just help me with getting the job of my dreams and I promise I’ll give back to you!”
At this point, Jesus had abundantly provided many examples and miracles that prove His authority, and yet the scribes and Pharisees demanded a sign from Jesus. If these people had just opened their hearts and eyes to the Messiah, they would’ve encountered Jesus for who He really was. Instead of showing a sign, He points them towards repentance and the example of Jonah. Jesus criticizes them for not seeking signs with genuine faith! The religious leaders were so blinded by their narrow requests, that they missed the forest for the trees – they missed the obvious.
