Matthew 13:1-23

Reflect

As Jesus explained what the kingdom of God was like to those who followed Him, He often chose to speak in parables. Here, Jesus is asked why He uses this kind of approach. Jesus knows that not everyone who followed Him around did so out of a desire to learn more about Him and His kingdom. Some were there to find ways to discredit Him and to find ways to get rid of Him permanently. So Jesus, aware of who was in the crowd, spoke in ways that made sense to those who desired to understand the beauty of the kingdom of God. To those who were there for more nefarious purposes, it seemed to not make any sense at all.

Jesus had a masterful way of talking about things like the common practice of planting crops and used it to explain spiritual truths like what happens to those who hear the very same message but have different responses to it.

We have a fuller understanding of Jesus’ earthly ministry by virtue of living long after Jesus completed what He came to do. We can see more clearly how these simple stories contain so much meaning for us about the mystery and the simplicity of the Kingdom of God.

I pray you will let the seeds of truth that Jesus sows into your life put down deep roots and bear much fruit for His honour and glory.
