Devotional Guide for Saturday, March 2

Matthew 16:1-12

Reflect

I’ve never been interested in bread making, but my understanding is that all it takes is just a little bit of yeast added to the dough that makes the bread rise. The small bit of yeast slowly permeates the dough until it is spread throughout the whole thing and causes the dough to rise. This seemingly small amount eventually has a big impact on the whole loaf. In our passage today Jesus uses the same analogy to warn us against seemingly insignificant, but wrong teachings. It might be easy for us to hear something and to just brush it off as inconsequential, but if we aren’t on guard against these kinds of teachings, it can be easy for these things to slowly permeate throughout our lives, often without us really noticing.

Are there any teachings that you’ve been listening to lately that maybe sound good, but don’t necessarily line up with our understanding of Scripture? What is the lens that you use to discern when you hear a certain teaching, and decide whether or not it’s something that you agree with? Ask God for discernment as you walk through this day.
