Matthew 17:1-13
Reflect
The transfiguration is so packed with content that we often minimize it because we don’t know what to do with it. I’ll pass some thoughts your way, and if you are willing to accept, devote some time to chase these down:
In the previous passage, Jesus puts on His game face with direct challenges. Why is this next passage a full six days later?
Why the mountain? How was a mountain significant to Moses and Elijah?
The Father (v5) is short on words. What significance do each of His phrases have?
The Father called Jesus His Son at the baptism, and it launched Jesus’s ministry. Why this time?
Up until this point, Moses and Elijah have been players in the stories passed down for generations. Now they are visible. How would this affect the disciples’ understanding of the afterlife?
The disciples have a lot to figure out as they consider what role Jesus has. What’s with the Cross? Why is He telling us that He’s leaving us? Then they replay “Listen to My Son”! I’m going to take a leap and suggest that the entire walk down the mountain had that imperative bouncing around in their head.
Take a step--“Listen to My Son”. Take a step--“Listen to My Son”. Isn’t that what this journey of life is about? Take a step--“Listen to My Son”.
What does taking a step look like for you?
How is that step a response to “Listen to My Son”?
I’d love to hear from you.
