Devotional Guide for Sunday, March 17

John 13:1-20

Reflect

This Sunday we will take time to look at one event that is found in John’s record of the last supper and the question that Jesus asks which is found in it.  In John 13:1-20 we have the account of Jesus washing the disciple’s feet.  This act of foot washing was normally done for guests as they entered the home and was carried out by the lowest servant, as it was the most demeaning job.  And yet Jesus willingly takes it upon himself to do this, despite objections.  After completing this task Jesus asks his disciples “Do you understand what I have done for you?”

Through Jesus’ ministry he has modeled a life of service for those around him.  In this last day before he goes to the cross, he takes one more opportunity to show in a very visual manner what he is about to do and how followers of Jesus should choose a way of life contrary to the self-promoting values of the world they live in.

If we understand Jesus and what he has done for us, we will try to live a life that prioritizes serving others rather than serving self.
