Matthew 18:1-9
Reflect
How is greatness measured in our culture? Is it determined by mastery in a sport like Wayne Gretzky? Or having lots of money like Elon Musk? Or is it measured by a life of service to others like Mother Theresa? Wherever your opinion lies, not everyone’s definition of greatness is the same. In the passage today we see Jesus’ disciples arguing about who was the greatest. It seems that in their opinion it was about who held status and power. Which disciple was the best--and better than the rest? I find this so ironic because they were literally standing beside THE greatest among them--Jesus!
Unable to come to a conclusion, they bring this question to Jesus. Who is the greatest? What measuring stick would Jesus use to decide this? A child. Jesus tells his status hungry disciples that whoever humbles himself like a child will be the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.
Children are amazing little people. They aren’t concerned about social status--they don’t care who has the nicest toys or if they have the best swing set in the neighborhood. They are held up as an example of humility, an example for His disciples and us to follow.

What does it look like for us to humble ourselves like children?
