Preparation for Sunday, March 10

John 6:51-69

Together as a community, we have been responding to Jesus’ invitation of “Dwelling in Christ.” In this series, we have considered some of the questions asked by Jesus. Throughout His ministry, Jesus asked a lot of questions. Dozens and dozens of questions. In every question, we have discovered an invitation.

Today, He is inviting you and me to place our trust and confidence in Him. Whatever you might be facing in this season of life, He is more than able to help. Whether it feels like He’s close at hand or far afield, He stands ready to meet you where you are right now. He has promised to be present in your life. You can trust Him. He has already met your deepest need. On the cross and in the empty grave He has done what you could never do.

Have you noticed how difficult it can be to trust? Are there days when your confidence is lacking?

So often, we tend to try and take care of things on our own. Deep within there is a pull in each of us toward independence and this pull creates a never-ending push that weighs us down. We simply do not have all that it takes to live life on planet earth independent of God. On our own the demands of life quickly become hollow and wearisome, and we get overwhelmed.

When you find yourself weighed down and weary from this push and pull, remember Jesus’ invitation to dwell in Him: “Come to me, all who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28, GW)

Apply

  • How (or in what areas of your life) have you been trying to live independently from God? How is the Holy Spirit directing you in these areas or matters?
  • Are you carrying a heavy load in this season of your life? What would it look like to bring this heavy load to Jesus? Are you ready to take this faith step?
