Devotional Guide for Friday, March 15

Matthew 19:16-30

Reflect

If there is ever a program that we’re trying to get into, a job or position that we’re applying for, a quest for happiness that we’re searching for, we often as the question, “What must I do?”  In order to enter into a program, there is typically a GPA requirement; if you’re applying for a job or a new position in a company, there are certain criteria that need to be met; if we’re looking for happiness, we’re examining how to fill our needs and desires in order to be happy.

For the young man in this passage, he’s confident in his actions, character, and loyalty to the covenant.  But Jesus challenges the young man’s self-confidence not with what deeds are good enough, but who is good enough – only God is good enough (v.17).  Eternal life is a gift.  There is nothing that we could have done to earn our eternity and relationship with God; it was solely the work and grace of God.

If the work of eternity has already been gifted to us, then we should not be surprised by Jesus’ call for sacrifice.  God is not concerned with our possessions, but our heart.

Apply

  1. What is impeding God’s call of sacrifice in your life?
    1. What priorities need to be reoriented, so that your heart would align to your calling as a disciple?
