Devotional Guide for Saturday, April 20

2 Thessalonians 3:6-18

Reflect

The church in Thessalonica was waiting for the return of Jesus. Some thought that while they waited, they could do nothing and instead live off the provision of others.

Paul very clearly tells them that this is not okay and that they need to “earn the food they eat” (v12). If they are able to work, they are to provide for themselves and those who can’t provide for themselves. Paul isn’t talking about people who can’t earn a living—those unable to because of physical health, mental health, age, etc. He is referring to those who CAN but refuse to do so.

Why does Paul say this and lay out how to deal with these situations? Because being idle leads to being disruptive. “They are not busy; they are busybodies” (v11). They were concerned with everyone else’s business and stirring up trouble!

Working allows us to provide for ourselves and others and it is also a part of God’s design and a consistent Biblical theme. Work didn’t originate from the Fall, it was in God’s design from the beginning. Adam tended the Garden of Eden. Work gives us meaning and purpose.

Take a moment to thank God for the work He has provided for you or ask Him how you can better lean into His design for work.
