2 Peter 3:17-18

Reflect

“Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position.” This is the second last verse Peter writes as he concludes his letter. He tells his hearers to be on guard from false teachers (a theme addressed in chapter 2). The wording, “be on guard,” invites us to rise to the task and responsibility of comparing what we hear, to the truth taught in Scripture. To not just receive blindly, but to make sure for ourselves that it aligns with biblical truth.

1 John 4:1 tells us to “not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.”

In Acts 17:11 we come across the Berean Jews who received Paul’s words about Jesus, and with eagerness examined the Scriptures for themselves to see if it was true. Because of this response they are referred to as being of “more noble character than those in Thessalonica” (v10).

May we also be people that know God’s Word for ourselves and grow in the “grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ” (v18).
