Devotional Guide for Friday, June 28

2 Peter 3:11-16

Reflect

As you think of the second advent of Jesus, what are some of the first things that come to mind? For some, it might be their possessions or finances that will be brought to dust. Others might think of missed opportunities and “what ifs” or “if only” situations. Perhaps it’s the salvation of close family and friends. These thoughts are powerful and significant!

Peter takes a different approach; his concern is less about what’s around him and more about what’s within the heart. Peter’s concern is godly living. His concern is holiness.

From Peter’s point of view, the present age is dissolving, and one’s lifestyle, marked by God’s characteristics, should be the point of focus. The believer's life should reflect a life freed from the fears, distractions, and entanglements of this world. Followers of Jesus are not living passively for the second coming, but are actively participating with God in the inauguration of Jesus’ return through their changed hearts.
