Philippians 1:7-11

Reflect

As we continue our summer theme of “A Deeper Joy” it is of substantial benefit to immerse ourselves in the context that Paul writes. Take a few minutes and get to know the Philippian church through Acts 16.

Paul loves this church for many reasons, including the fact that it was the first church in Europe and they became intimately involved in Paul’s quest to spread the message of joyful freedom.

My friend mentioned to me the other day that while she served as a nurse in a max prison, every inmate could identify a person that prayed for them. My mom never stopped praying, and telling me that she was praying for me to follow Jesus.

In verse 9, we see Paul doing the same. Why would he tell them? Why not just pray for someone? Of course, it’s encouraging to have someone tell you they are praying for you, but don’t be making it only about you.

Paul is awakening the recipients throughout this letter to the reality that it’s all about God. Evidence of answered prayer is when we align with Jesus in the praying, and the recipient also aligns with God’s glorious desire for them. Those desires are love, excellence, purity, etc. for the benefit of others.
