Proverbs 10:1-15
Reflect
We encounter numerous situations that challenge and test our capacity for love – this happens daily! With verse 12, we are met with a profound truth: love covers all wrongs. Not in the sense of ignorance or pretending they don’t exist, but by encouraging forgiveness, reconciliation, and avoiding angry arguments.
Hatred for others stirs up discord and strife. It magnifies offenses and breeds retaliation, bitterness, and deep-seated anger. Hatred perpetuates conflict--there is absolutely no peace. In fact, it separates us from the God of peace, for whom Jesus died on the cross to establish real and eternal peace between us and God.
On the other hand, love rooted in Jesus has transformative power. It allows us to see beyond the mistakes and faults of others; it enables us to foster unity; it gives us strength to choose reconciliation; it covers wrongdoing. This doesn’t absolve the hurtful behaviour, but love helps us respond with understanding and grace. In the same way that our sins have been covered with perfect and beautiful love, we are called to extend that same love to those around us.
