Proverbs 14:1-19

Reflect

Decades ago, as a young Christian man, I often came to Proverbs seeking wisdom and God's will for my life. On the surface, Proverbs seemed easily digestible to a growing Christian and I would read them to children as well.

My Grandfather was a farmer and Steam Engineer. He and his Steam Engine (riveting work) helped build the High Level Bridge in 1910. My Grandfather died when I was 5. Though that was 65 years ago I still recall the words of wisdom he sowed in a child's heart and am often reminded of them when I read Proverbs.

Proverbs 14:1-19 contrasts include foolishness and wisdom, righteousness and wickedness. A key verse and warning is found in verse 12: "There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death." Contrast man’s way and God's way. Man’s will and way promotes a freeway of clear sailing, prosperity and safe passage. Reality shows warning signs and hazards are not clearly marked on man’s deceptive path to destruction, as Jesus taught in Matthew 7:13,14.
In contrast, God's way (the way of life), Jesus spoke of Himself (John 14:6).

Apply

What is currently influencing you? Is it the world or God's will and way? Today's youth (Gen. X) and younger are living in times of social unrest, job insecurity, financial crisis, climate anxiety, etc. How are you as parents, grandparents, mentors, sowing wisdom, encouragement and love while reflecting Jesus, and directing youth to follow Him on the narrow road?
