Proverbs 16:17-33

Reflect

In an often-quoted Proverb, we’re reminded that “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall”. It’s probably not hard to think of a number of examples where we have seen this happen to someone. It’s easy to be tempted to think that we have all the answers and always know what is right. Later in our reading today it says that “There is a way and it appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.” There are a few reasons why a certain path may seem to be right: either it looks easy, popular, or achieves us the things that we want, but we need to be discerning of if this really is the best path. Just because we think it’s the right path, doesn’t necessarily mean it is the right path that God has for us.

It’s worth it to check in with God periodically and ask those questions: “Am I on the right track?” “Is the path I’m on really the right one, or are there ways that I’ve been prideful?” I’d encourage us to spend some time sitting with these questions today.
