Romans 15:13: “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Have you heard the expression, "Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst"? In human terms, it's wise advice. We may wish for the most desirable outcomes but not taking into account and planning for what to do if things don't work out could result in some really dire consequences.
This passage tells us that our God is the God of hope. True, ongoing hope depends not on our circumstances, wishful thinking, or some feeling we just will into existence. It is a gift of God which we can receive through faith in Him. When we tap into that hope, trusting that God is who He says He is, and will do what He's promised to do, the result is joy and peace.
Empowered by the Holy Spirit that hope doesn't just fill us - it bubbles over. Aaron Cranton, with McKernan's partner ministry Old Strathcona Street Mission, says the main problem he encounters on the streets is not homelessness, it's hopelessness. May we be people of overflowing hope, sharing the joy and peace that only God can give with those around us.
